Snapshot: Tata Motors expanded its commercial vehicle lineup with launch of 10 new Prima trucks today in India

Tata Motors expanded its commercial vehicles portfolio with the launch of 10 new heavy duty trucks today in India. Part of the ‘HORIZONEXT’ strategy, the new models are divided between tippers (ranging between 25 to 49 tons) and cargo (25 to 31 tons) segments. The company has launched the new models on Prima platform which it launched five years before in India. The Prima range has changed the trucking landscape in India with introduction of never-seen-before features in the segment like cruise control and ABS, while the introduction of common rail diesel injection (CRDi) technology in commercial segment has increased productivity while keeping the operational costs down.

The new Prima LX Cargo range consists of six models- Prima LX 4928.S SRT, Prima LX 4928.S HRT, LX 4028.S SR, LX 4028.S HR, LX 2523.T and LX 3123.T. While, four new tipper models are christened as Prima LX 2523.K, Prima LX 2528.K, Prima LX 3123.K, Prima LX 3128.K. The first four models from the cargo lineup are powered by a 267 BHP, 6.7-litre ISBe diesel engine with Tata's G1150 9-speed transmission. Nomenclature of models is on the basis of their specifications, as the first two numeric values stand for the model's loading capacity while sub-terms like SRT and HRT are for Sub Reduction Tandem and Hub Reduction Tandem axles.

The LX 2523.T and LX 3123.T are India's first multi-axle trucks powered by a 230 BHP 5.9-litre Cummins engine. While the former LX 2523.T has 3-axle configuration, the latter has 4-axle setup.

The tipper range is powered by both aforementioned engines with similar power ratings. Transmission is by the same 9-speed transmission and the only difference between both models is of load capacity. The tipper range is designed to deliver best in class mileage and power-to-weight ratio.

All new models in the Prima range come with a warranty of 4 years/4 lakh kilometers. The cabin space is spacious and prospective buyers can also opt for air-conditioning to enhance the comfort level for drivers.

Tata Motors has been dominating the commercial vehicle market in India since more than a decade now while maintaining the consistent market share of 64-67 per cent. However, the competition is growing rapidly as  now there are twelve manufacturers of commercial vehicles, compared to only five a decade ago.
