With the successful launch of Hexa SUV, Tata Motors is preparing for the launch of its compact sedan codenamed as Kite 5 in March 2017. The car was first showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo and is based on the company’s successful hatchback, the Tiago platform. Just like the Tiago, the Kite 5 sedan is also based on Tata’s IMPACT design philosophy.
The compact sedan will be positioned below the Zest in the sub-four metre sedan segment and compete with the likes of the upcoming Chevrolet Beat Essentia compact sedan, once it is launched. The homegrown automaker has still not confirmed the name of the model, but it is being rumoured that the company might call it either 'Tata Viago or Tata Altigo'. The car borrows the design cues from its hatchback sibling in terms of the front fascia and bit of interior as well. However, the company might add more of feature inside the compact sedan to give a difference between both the models.
The Kite 5 will feature ConnectNext system, while for the safety, the car will come with dual airbags, anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution. The company has been working over in-car infotainment, so we can expect it to come with a 5 inch infotainment system with 8 speakers and steering mounted controls.
Mechanically, the Kite 5 will be powered by the Tiago’s existing 1.2-litre Revotron petrol and 1.05-litre three cylinder diesel motor. The powertrain will come paired with the choice of either a 5 speed manual or a 5 speed automated manual transmission. Tata motors is also planing to build a performance division that will be called 'TaMo'.
