Followed by the revealing of Tata Zica, Tata Motors has begun road-testing of its all-new compact SUV, internally know as “Osprey” or the “X104” which is expected to be showcased at the Auto Expo 2016. Based on the Nexon concept that was showcased at the Auto Expo 2014 and this production version will be offered with a lot of the styling cues of the concept cars.
Reportedly, the Tata Motors designer aggressively styled the osprey with design cues inspired by the Range Rover Evoque, which includes a prominent grille, sharply tapered roof and swept back headlights. With a conscious focus by Tata Motors, the styling of the Osprey has made some compromises for the rear seat packaging and space. Based on the Vista’s X1 platform, this is the first compact SUV from Tata Motors to enter in sub 4 meter category market.
The Osprey is expected to be offered with a new Tata’s in-house 1.5-litre diesel motor that produces a good 110bhp and will be mated with a new six-speed manual gearbox designed to handle the extra power and torque. The petrol version is also offered, which will be powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-charged engine that has just debuted in the Tata Zica, and there are possibility that the brand could offer this model with an AMT gearbox.
Despite the engine’s power advantage over competitors such as the Ford EcoSport, the engine is designed well to give better fuel efficiency. It is expected that the market launch is unlikely before the end of 2016.
