Tata Motors is working on a new mid-size SUV, which is expected to launch by the end of 2018. At the SIAM annual conclave, the Managing Director of the company, Mr Guenter Butschek, revealed that the new SUV, codenamed as Tata Q501, will be launched in the second half of 2018.
The premium SUV car from the maker is expected to be based on the last generation, but very capable, Freelander 2 platform to give a suitable design to the specific model. The testing model of this car has been seen with a Land Rover Discover Sport body on the Indian roads. According to Mr Guenter Butschek, the new vehicle will be positioned as a ‘mid-sized SUV’.
The new SUV will be available in two seating configurations - 5 seater and 7 seater. Expectations are that Tata Q501 will get an all-wheel-drive at the time of launch. Moreover, it will come in two engine variants, petrol and diesel, to take up the popular cars in the segment such as Hyundai Tucson and the Jeep Compass along with larger SUVs like the Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner.
According to the reports, the Tata Q501 will be powered by a four-cylinder multijet diesel engine with a capacity of 2.0-litre that will have a maximum output of 168 bhp of power and 360 Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine will come paired with a 6-speed manual as well as an automatic transmission system. Though much details are uncertain, it is expected that the new SUV will be packed with latest technology and features.
Expectations are that the manufacturer might showcase their new product, Tata Q501, at the upcoming event of 2018 Geneva Motor Show. As far as price range is concerned, it will be in the range of INR 20 lakh to INR 25 lakh. Tata Q501 will be a premium offering from the makers and it will be positioned above the Tata Hexa.
