The home-grown car giant, Tata Motors has commenced deliveries of Safari Storme to the Indian Army. For those not in the know, the Safari Storme was field tested and selected among several other models, to be used by the Indian Army for personnel and troop movement along with deployment in tough terrains for action. Tata Motors will deliver a total of 3,192 units of Safari Storme to the Indian Army in a phased manner. The rugged model from Tata will replace the ageing Maruti Suzuki Gypsy.

The Safari Storme abides by all the conditions put forth by the Indian Army. One of the requirements for the vehicle was that the vehicle should have a payload capacity of 800kg. Besides, the vehicle should have a hard-top roof and an air-conditioner. Aside from Tata, other car giants, such as Nissan and Mahindra will also provide SUVs to the armed forces.

The primary differential between the regular Safari Storme and the Armed Forces version is the matte green exterior paint. To match up with the matte colour, Tata has replaced the chrome bits on the outside with the body painted or black finished trims. In a bid to avoid detection by enemy forces at night, the Safari Storme for Armed Forces comes with headlamps that project horizontal beam.

At the rear, Safari Storme gets towing trailers and a couple of canister mounts on the fenders, which are used for keeping extra fuel. The bonnet in front now gets an antenna for the radios. In addition to these changes, the SUV now comes with improved suspension set-up. As for the mechanicals, the SUV continues to use the same 2.2-litre turbocharged oil burner with maximum power of 154bhp against 400Nm torque. Transmission duties are handled by a six-speed manual unit along with a standard 4x4 drivertrain.
