After tasting success with its Nexon subcompact SUV, the home-grown automaker, Tata Motors is now planning to bring Maruti Ignis challenger that will sit below its stellar model Nexon in the line-up. Being developed under the codename, ‘Tata Hornbill’, the micro SUV is expected to launch in 2021. The Tata Hornbill is the same SUV which was earlier known as Tata X445. It was earlier expected to break covers by 2022, albeit the launch seems to have been preponed by a year. Though Tata has not released any official statement on the same, the model is already in the works suggest media reports.

Unlike Nexon, which underpins X1 platform (same as Zest and Bolt), Tata Hornbill will be based on Tata’s new Advanced Modular Platform (AMP). This platform will make it’s with Tata’s highly awaited Tata 45X set for launch in calendar year 2019. The AMP platform will be used for a number of upcoming Tata models including a mid-size sedan.

While Tata Motors is working out on meeting the BS6 norms that will come into force in the coming months, a turbocharged engine would only make X445 a pricier offering compared to the rivals in the segment. It is therefore expected the X445 could get a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit which could either be a rendition of the same engine that powers Tata Tiago or Tata could come up with a newly developed engine for the model along with manual and automated versions of the TA65 5-speed gearbox. This could give X445 an edge over rivals Mahindra KUV100 and Maruti Ignis which miss out on a petrol engine. For those not in the know, Hyundai is also developing a micro SUV that could be introduced sometime in 2020.
