Tesla is readily showing everyone that non-fossil fuel run vehicles are the way of the future. With a more aggressive marketing stratergy and dealer and service network, they have been able to sell about 6900 units of the Model S, which is a premium hatchback. At a press confernce at the Detroit Auto Show, they also revealed that they have more than 25,000 units of the Model S globally.
The Model S is a full-sized 5-door hatchback. It has a rear-motor, rear-wheel drive layout and is driven by a 310 kW, 600 Nm torque electric motor. It has a single fixed gear that has a reduction ratio of 9.73:1. There are 2 versions of the car based on the battery type - 85 kWh battery and 60 kWh battery. The base model has a 270 kW motor and the performance model has a 310 kW motor.
Even though the Model S is an electric vehicle, and there were a couple if incidents where a privately owned vehicle caught fire, it has been rated as the safest car ever tested by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). "NHTSA does not publish a star rating above 5, however safety levels better than 5 stars are captured in the overall Vehicle Safety Score (VSS) provided to manufacturers, where the Model S achieved a new combined record of 5.4 stars." is what Tesla said in a press release.
The latest firware version, v5.8 is the one which is being installed on all the new cars to roll out of the manufacturing units, and the ones which are already out on the roads recieve Over The Air (OTA) updates.
Tesla is looking to register "reckless" growth for the year 2014, with more employees, better firmwares, more superchargers on the roads and new ones in Canada as well.
