Tesla Inc has unveiled a new prototype of an electric truck, called the Semi-truck, last week. With this, the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, has said that the introduction of this new electric truck is a strategic move by the company and a major step forward in getting the automotive industry gradually ride away from fossil fuels and adopt electric mobility as mainstream.

The recent change in the regulations regarding the emission for freight-carriers is slowly mounting immense pressure on the companies to adopt carriages with lower emission powertrains. However, even with this pressure, the transition over to complete electric sector for this segment wouldn’t be quick.

The newly unveiled Tesla Semi borrows some parts from the Model 3, a mass-market passenger electric car. The handles, display screen inside and some other titbits look a lot similar. But by no way is the truck similar to the conventional trucks. The door is long and confines the step inside. The cab is quite spacious and high, even for the driver to stand upright. Right in front of the pilot seat, there are two screens on either side, which are the same as the one used in the Model 3.

The designers have designed the Tesla Semi truck in a way that the driver’s seat is forward as there are no such transmission or engine compartments coming up. However, the company unveiled a prototype last week, which is expected to go through some changes when the production-ready version is out.

This strategy taken up by Tesla Inc to work its way with electric powerplants into the freight-carriage segment will definitely create an optimism in the industry. But more daunting is the way the company will need to sustain the development as it could be well noted that small and lighter-duty trucks could be electrified first, rather than heavy-duty ones.
