Maruti Ciaz occupies the first sales spot.
Hyundai Verna and Honda City occupy third and fourth sales spots.
Skoda Rapid and Nissan Sunny only two models to show growth in December 2019.
There has been a surprise entry into the top three of the bestselling midsize sedans for the month of December 2019 and that model is the Skoda Rapid. The Maruti Ciaz tops the sales charts and the two other usual suspects Hyundai Verna and Honda City are in third and fourth place, but it is Rapid that has surprised.
The Ciaz logged sales of 1786 units while the Rapid logged sales of 1359 units. For the Ciaz, this is a reduction of approximately 62 percent year on year, but for the Rapid, it is a 55 percent increase year on year. The only other midsize sedan to register an increase in sales is the Nissan Sunny, which sold 51 units in December 2019. The Verna sold 1295 units and the City, 1004 units, which were 35 percent and 70 percent decrease respectively, year on year. The Vento managed to shift 469 units whereas the Yaris sold only 76 units in December.
The surprising figure that the Rapid has provided is probably due to great offers being provided at the dealership level as the company would like to clear BS4 stock of the sedan, and the VW group is focused on launching a compact SUV based on the MQB A0 IN platform. The Vento will get a BS Vl update, which means the Rapid will possibly get a BS Vl update as well.
Meanwhile, though, the company would prefer to get rid of as much BS lV stock as possible. The Skoda Rapid is available with either a 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic ‘box or a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 7 speed DSG dual-clutch automatic.
The City and the Verna are also due for new models in 2020 - the Verna will receive a major facelift which will make it look very different and have a major feature update. The Honda City is due for a whole new generation. This news could be possibly why customers are deferring their purchases for these two models at this time.
