Its been almost a year, since the rumour-mill was abuzz that Toyota would bring in their C2 segment sedan Vios in India. And voilà, the third-generation of the Toyota Vios mid-sized sedan has been spotted as test mule on the roads of Bangalore, Karnataka by our friends at Team-BHP. It was covered with camouflage and it is still unknown whether it was being tested for R&D purposes or it is actually launching in India. However, the company hasn't issued any official statement on the same.
Toyota already has the presence in C1 segment and D1 segment in the country with Etios sedan and Corolla Altis saloon, respectively. Hence, it would be highly beneficial for the company to launch the Vios sedan - which is solely made for emerging markets like Indonesia, Philippines, China and India - in our country. It would not only fill the gap between C1 and D1 segments but also emerge as a top contender for the likes of Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and Ford Fiesta. Third-generation Toyota Vios was unveiled at 2013 Bangkok motor show, and it is already on sale in several Asia-Pacific markets. Moreover, the company can price it quite competitively in India between the Etios and Corolla Altis as former comes in price range of Rs 6-8.5 Lakhs, while the latter is priced between Rs. 13-17.60 Lakhs.
Talking about the possible engine options of Toyota Vios in India, it could borrow both the petrol and diesel engines from the Etios sedan. As for petrol, it could be equipped with Etios-sourced 1.5L engine, while diesel variant would in-house a 1.4L mill available with Etios's diesel trim. In countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, China and the Philippines, where it is already on sale, it is being offered with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission. In India too, if launched, it could feature both of the aforesaid gearboxes.
