Toyota Motor Corporation first presented its all-new hydrogen fuel cell sedan in concept form at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show and then, followed it up with the production-ready avatar in June 2014. Now according to the latest reports coming out of Europe, the Japanese automaker seems to have settled on a nameplate for its fuel-cell model, and the name will be ’Mirai’, which means ‘future’ in Japanese.
It should be noted that Toyota hasn’t yet confirmed the news with any official statement, but according to an unnamed source, the Japanese automaker has reportedly, registered the name in the U.S.
The Toyota Mirai is expected to launch in April 2015 in the Japanese market, post which the model will debut in the U.S and the European markets. The asking price for the fuel cell sedan has been estimated by the company to be around 7 million yen or 70,000 U.S dollars or Rs 43 lakh approximately.
The Japanese automaker has stated that it would start selling the model only in the regions, “where hydrogen re-fuelling infrastructure is being developed.” More details about the four-door hydrogen fuel cell sedan such as the specifications, sales targets, variants and exact prices will be announced by the automaker in the coming months.
