  • Toyota’s new small SUV is called the ‘Rise’
  • It will also be the base for the Daihatsu Rocky
  • Made for emerging markets
  • Powered by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine
  • Will have both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options

Toyota will unveil its new compact SUV called the Rise in November. The Rise is a sub-4 meter SUV that will also spawn a Daihatsu model called the Rocky.

The Toyota Rise/Daihatsu Rocky is designed for emerging markets across the globe and is based on Toyota’s DNGA platform. It will be powered by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, and both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options will be made available to customers. The Rise and Rocky were first seen as the Daihatsu DN Trec concept two years ago. They are designed to compete with the likes of the Suzuki Jimny. The first market they will launch in will be the Japanese market, followed by others after.

The Toyota Rise measures 3.98 meters long, and seems to be a great fit for the Indian market on the surface, but Toyota already has a badge-engineering agreement with Suzuki in India with the Vitara Brezza (among others like the Ciaz and Ertiga), which means it will have a readymade, proven product for the Indian market in the same segment. This will render the Rise unsuitable for the manufacturer in our market as things stand.

However, should Toyota decide that it needs a second small SUV in its India lineup, the Rise (or Rocky) will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, and Mahindra XUV 300.
