TVS Motor Company Limited's factory in Hosur, Tamilnadu has started churning out the new Star City+ from its assembly line. The new motorcycle would be formally launched nationwide in the first week of the following month. However, the launch will first cover north Indian markets like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, UP and Bihar, and the motorcycle would be available all over India by June.
The new Star City+ was first unveiled at the Auto Expo in February this year. Thankfully, the features shown at the expo seem to have made it to the production bike. A service reminder indicator, all-gear electric start, digital speedometer, hi-intensity headlight, soft touch grips, etc., have all been incorporated into the list of features of this new Star City+. Alloy wheels are standard fitment too. The bike is powered by a 110 cc Ecothrust DLI engine that produces 8.1 bhp of power at 7,500 rpm and 8.1 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. The manufacturer claims a mileage of 83.9 km/l.
The Star City and its plus variant have been a success story for TVS - the company has sold over four million units of the Star brand so far. TVS reported a 17.44 per cent increase in its total sales at 1,96,826 units in March 2014. The company had managed to sell 1,67,583 units in the same month of the previous year.
Initially, TVS is looking to sell around 10,000 units of the new bike per month, though the target in the longer run is to sell 15, 000 units per month. The company should not face a problem to meet these numbers provided the new bike does not see a huge rise in the sticker price - this is one segment where even trivial price differences can be enough to send the customer away to the competitor.
