Further, he added that methanol is made from coal and the cost of the product is Rs 22 per litre as compared to the prevailing price of about Rs 80 per litre for petrol, while china is making the same product for Rs 17 per litre.  He also said chemical factories like Deepak Fertilisers and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) can produce methanol.

Swedish car manufacturer, Volvo’s methanol-powered buses will be tested with this fuel in Mumbai soon. With the use of locally available methanol, he will be attempting to run 25 buses entirely on the fuel.

In India, petrol comes with a blend of ethanol, due to its limited production of ethanol, there is scarcity.  The Union Minister said that he has suggested his cabinet colleague to look at this rather than building petrol refineries that cost over Rs 70,000 crore. Further, he also expressed his concerns on the traffic growth because of a 22 per cent rise in car sales annually and expressed a desire to focus less on roads because of this.
