Mercedes-Benz, over the past couple of years has evolved tremendously in terms of the design and not one or two cars but the entire portfolio globally is benefiting from it. The most budget friendly Merc, A-Class is a perfect example of the change and the hatchback always looked good. And now the Mercedes has taken the wraps off the facelifted 2016 Mercedes Benz A-Class.
The facelift has been given to the complete A-Class range including the range-topping A45 AMG. The changes are, both in terms of looks as well as mechanical. In terms of the looks, the A-Class facelift gets the trademark diamond grille upfront, mildly updated bumpers, optional LED headlights (standard in the A45 AMG) and updated graphics for the headlight as well as the tail light clusters.
Step inside the cabin of the facelifted Mercedes-Benz A-Class and you will notice the similarity between the CLA-Class cabin and the A-Class cabin. The infotainment system is updated and supports the CarPlay and the Android Auto. The switches are now galvanized, the instrument cluster is revised and has a tubular design with new colors. You can also get an optional free-standing 8-inch display screen.
Talking in terms of the engines, the entry-level A160 is powered by a 1.6-litre engine that develops 102 PS and 180 Nm of torque. Then comes the A180d BlueEFFICIENCY Edition, that is the most economical engine among the range and is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The engine produces 109 PS and 260 Nm output. The engine consumes only 3.5 litre/100 km and has a CO2 emission of only 89 g/km.
The updated 2.1-litre engine powering the A220d now produces 177 PS power, which is an added 7 PS over the previous model. The A250 Sport and A250 Sport 4MATIC again gets 7 PS more and is rated at 218 PS instead of the previous 211 PS. Apart from the power, manual transmission has been added to the A250 and A250 Sport along with a launch assist function that comes with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The top-of-the-line A45 AMG is the again the hatchback king and is rated at 381 PS and 475 Nm as against the 367 PS produced by Audi RS3 Sportback. The old model produced 360 PS & 450 Nm. The output increase has resulted in the performance change too, and the A45 AMG now does 0-100 kmph in 4.2 seconds. The good thing is, the fuel efficiency is not changed and so is the carbon emissions.
The Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG gets an added Dynamic Select, which allows the driver to choose from the Comfort, Sport, Sport + and individual modes. The modes change the overall handling of the performance hatchback. The 7-speed dual clutch is also optimized now and gets short gear ratios that enable "more dynamic acceleration in all speed ranges."
We have no word on the launch of the updated A-Class in India yet, but it can be anywhere around late 2015 to early 2016!
