The biggest and most expensive SUV on sale today from Daimler is about to get a mid-cycle refresh which will bring a nomenclature change as the “GL” moniker will be dropped in favor of “GLS”. This decision has been taken as a move to better point out the similarities in size between models and in this case, the GLS will be just about as big as the flagship S-Class.
If you were hoping for a comprehensive revision, prepare to be disappointed as the updates will be limited to slightly different front and rear bumpers and new graphics for the headlights and taillights. We also notice some camouflage on the hood which could indicate that something is about to change, but it won’t be anything major.
Word on the street says Mercedes-Benz will provide optional 22-inch alloy wheels along with a night package which is going to encompass several bits and pieces featuring a black look. As far as the interior is concerned, it will probably carry just about the same revisions implemented in the GLE. An update to the safety & assistance systems is also in the works, along with some interior cabin tweaks to keep the full-size SUV fresh.
The engine lineup and gearbox offerings will obviously mirror those of the GLE likely without any changes, but we should wait for a confirmation from Mercedes-Benz. Since the model is set to premiere next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show, an online reveal could occur in the coming weeks. Customers will be able to place an order in December and will start getting the cars January next year in Europe while in India the model will likely be available several months later. Don’t be too surprised if the GLS will be slightly more expensive than the equivalent GL as this is the trend nowadays when facelifts are out, especially among premium automakers.
