The Ingolstadt-based automaker is cooking up a brand new crossover that goes by the name of e-tron quattro and it will be shown in conceptual form next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. It’s more than just for show as the vehicle will evolve into a production version sometime in 2018 with the Q6 moniker and is going to act as a direct rival to the Tesla Model X.
Until then, we can take a closer look at the concept which will have one of the most aerodynamic bodies in this segment as Audi says the drag coefficient stands at just 0.25, so they probably optimized it in the wind tunnel. In terms of size, it’s larger than the Q5 yet smaller than the Q7 while the underpinnings have a lot in common with the second generation Q7 since the e-tron quattro utilizes the same MLB Evo platform.
From what we see in the attached teaser, the high-riding model from Audi will have a somewhat low roofline creating a sleek and sporty appearance while the plastic body cladding around the wheel arches and side skirts denotes this will still be a rugged crossover featuring an all-wheel drive powertrain.
It doesn’t have a combustion engine as the concept comes with three electric motors, one mounted at the front and the other two in the back. There’s a big battery pack placed between the axles and in the production car it will offer enough juice for more than 500 km of range.
As far as the interior cabin is concerned, it adopts a futuristic layout with a minimal amount of physical buttons and knobs as these have been replaced by OLED displays which are all touch-operated. We almost forgot to mention the headlights will feature a newly developed matrix laser OLED technology which according to Audi will offer stellar lighting performance.
A full reveal of the e-tron quattro concept is scheduled for next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
