It was a dream race for Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who not only broke the record of legendary Ayrton Senna to win the maximum number of poles, but also clinched the Canadian Formula 1 GP to reduce the points gap between him and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. The Briton started the race from lead position, after winning the qualifying session, and breaking the world record set by Brazilian Senna.

Hamilton didn’t let the lead go throughout the race and was fast enough to win the GP, reduing points gap between him and Vettel from 25 points to just 12 points. Sebastian Vettel, on the other hand, couldn’t even find a place on the podium, finishing fourth after Valterri Bottas of Mercedes and Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
But the limelight was hogged by young Max Verstappen, who gave Hamilton a run of his money, until the Red Bull driver had to retire due to an unforced error. Had it been otherwise, Verstappen could have beaten Hamilton to clinch the race win. It was another good race for the Indian outfit – Force India, who won their double points, with Sergio Perez finishing fifth and Esteban Ocon finishing sixth.
Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari finished 7th ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Renault at the 8th spot, followed by Williams' Lance Stroll at the ninth spot and Romain Grosjean of Haas at the tenth spot. With a double-podium finish, Mercedes has secured their top-spot in the championship table once again, leaing behind Ferrari, whose both the drivers failed to finish in the top 3.
Lewis Hamilton was confident from the very beginning to win the Canadian GP and he indicated the same even before the start of the race weekend. On the other hand, the Honda-McLaren trouble is getting out of hand. Fernando Alonso came back to the F1 with a deadline to the Honda-McLaren outfit to get their car right. But to his dismay, Alonso had to retire just 2 laps before reaching the finishing line. We have to wait and watch to see the implication of this failure.
