Way back in the 80s and 90s, the Honda engine used to be a big deal, powering the championship winning cars like the McLaren and the Williams. But their dominance soon came to an end, as it does for all the manufactures at some point or another. While the majority of the players gets lost in the horde of winners, some try to come back. So did Honda in 2000's, but failed to create any magic, and again, leaving the F1 for the good. But, Honda is not giving up this easily and they have planned their return to the F1 in the 2015 season.
Honda has partnered with their old time friends, McLaren, for the 2015 season. McLaren is currently using a Mercedes engine and doing fairly good with 6th position in the constructors table. "Working toward Honda's F1 participation starting in the 2015 season, the development of the power unit is entering its prime phase at our R&D facility in Sakura (Tochigi, Japan), where we have transferred our automobile motor sports development earlier this year" said Honda's Motorsport chief Yasuhisa Arai.
The new video starts with acknowledging all the past victories of the constructors, using the Honda engine. Later, the video shows the engineers testing the engine while doing laps of the Suzuka circuit in the simulator. With all the regulations and changes in the engines, one thing was disappointing and that was the sound of the engine. The engine from the yesteryears, used to roar, but now, it is no joy to listen to.
Honda has not raced since the 2008 season, but the change in the specifications of the engine, has made Honda re-think their decision to quit F1. But, with so many years out of the game, the Honda is destined to face stiff competition. None the less Honda and McLaren can regenerate their old flame to win another championship.
