Renault India unveiled its all-new budget hatchback Kwid in June this year in the country, and stated that it's launch would take place during festive season. Now, the hatch has been spied testing completely undisguised on the Chennai roads by YouTube user Lokesh Kumar. The company stated that Kwid would be launched in a price domain of Rs. 3-4 Lakhs, while challenging the Maruti Alto & Hyundai Eon.
Renault Kwid, with its high ground clearance, appears more of a crossover than a conventional hatchback. It would be the only car in its segment to come loaded with a 7-inch touchscreen ‘Media Nav’ infotainment system. Being developed at Renault Nissan Technology Business Center India (RNTBCI) in Chennai, it would have a localization of around 98 percent. Underpinning the CMF-A architecture, Renault Kwid would measure 3680mm in length and 1580mm in width. The French automaker has already ruled out the possibilities of introducing a diesel variant, and hence the Kwid would only be launched in petrol fuel trim with both manual as well as AMT gearbox.
Under the hood, the Kwid hatch would have a 0.8L, 3-cylinder petrol motor, which would apparently develop a maximum power of 57bhp. This wngine would be the most powerful in its league, beating Eon's 55.2bhp power. It would be paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. However, as per Renault India officials, after a few months, the Kwid would get an even more powerful 1.0L motor with an AMT unit. It is further learnt that the automated transmission would feature a rotary shifter at the centre console, quite identical to the driving mode selector seen on the Duster compact SUV. It was also known through sources that Kwid would be exported to other developing nations from India.
