What comes to one's mind, when Volvo name is taken- Safety! Volvo is considered the brand who has taken safety to another level, and they time and again redefine the segment in terms of latest safety technologies. In an attempt to further solidify their efforts, Volvo unveiled a Run Off Road Protection system, which in this latest video, they put to test, by going in a ditch.
Yes, you heard it right- going in a ditch! Known as the ditch test, it is aimed to check the Run Off Road Protection technology. A Volvo XC 90 was used for the test, which was subjected to a tough condition, at speeds as high as 75 kmph. The aim was to check the condition of the driver, when the car enters a ditch at this speed.
The system, first detects, whether the car leaves the tarmac at speed and prepares the cabin and occupants for an impact. The very first step after detection is to retract the seat belts, followed by a spine protection element between the seat and the seat frame helps cushion the blow for passengers, the airbags are activated in case of a forceful frontal impact and release pin is sprung that retracts the brake pedal.
Volvo earlier showed off an animated video explaining how the system works. This time they have used a Volvo XC 90, but only the exterior view of the test is visible, and no condition of the driver is visible. Though, going by the history of Volvo, we can assume that he will be pretty safe inside. You can check the videos here, but don't try this at home!
