After celebrating fifth anniversary of the Pune plant recently, Volkswagen (VW) India is now ready to host the ceremony for rolling-out 50,000th export car from its Indian manufacturing facility. Volkswagen India commenced its export operations in 2011 with South Africa as its first market. Since then, within a span of two and half years, the company has expanded its reach and now export the Polo hatchback and the Vento Sedan to 32 countries across 3 continents from India. Most of the markets are from ASEAN region like Thailand, Singapore and Russia, but introduction of 'made in India' Vento in Mexico last year has ramped up the company's export figures abruptly.

Presently, every third car that rolls-out the Volkswagen's Pune assembly line is destined for an offshore market. Volkswagen developed the Vento specifically for Indian market which is an stretched version of the Polo hatchback with longer wheelbase and boot at the rear without any major changes further. In fact, the Vento is rechristened as Polo Sedan in Malaysia and Russia. Outside India, the Vento manufactures at VW's Kaluga plant in Russia while Malaysia get the knock down units of Polo and Vento from the Indian arm since April 2013.

The VW Polo and Vento both are due to get a mid-life facelift around mid 2014 in India. The new Polo has already been spotted testing several times on Indian roads while the Vento seems like is still under development stage. The 2014 Polo would be more interesting as the company will introduce it with new 1.5-litre TDI engine that might also make it to price lower due to excise benefits.
