- Volkswagen to focus solely on SUV models at the Auto Expo 2020.
- Volkswagen aims to have a presence in every SUV segment in India.
- Volkswagen will launch all the four SUVs in a phased-wise manner in India by 2021.
The country's biggest automotive extravaganza, the 2020 Auto Expo, is less than a month away from now and hence, several automakers have started revealing their product line-up for the biennial event. Volkswagen India has also announced that it will showcase four SUV models at the 2020 Auto Expo. The four SUVs for the Indian market are T-Roc, I.D. Crozz Electric Concept, T-Cross, and Tiguan AllSpace.
Volkswagen T-Roc has already been spotted a few times as a test mule on the Indian roads. Being a mid-sized SUV, it is touted to be the most affordable offering from the brand when it launches and takes on the likes of Jeep Compass, MG Hector, Honda CR-V, and Hyundai Tuscon. The T-Roc will be offered with a BS 6 compliant 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine which will be linked to a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Although, there is also a diesel variant available in global markets but it will not make it to the Indian shores.
Speaking of the I.D. Crozz Electric Concept, it had its first public appearance almost three years back at the 2017 Shanghai Motor Show. Being based on the VW Group's MED architecture, it will be powered by an 83kWh lithium-ion battery which will transmit power to both the front and rear wheels via two electric motors. The front motor will deliver the power of 102bhp and peak torque of 140Nm, while the rear motor will be more powerful in terms of power and torque as it will generate 204bhp and 310Nm. The combined power output and torque performance will be 306bhp and 450Nm with a driving range in excess of 500 km and a top speed of 180kmph.
Coming to the third product, the T-Cross SUV, it will take styling cues from the T-Roc while underpinning the MQB platform. Some of the salient features include LED headlamps with DRLs, huge wheels, flared wheel arches and sleep tail-lamp clusters. Internationally, Volkswagen T-Cross is available with a couple of petrol and single diesel powertrains while it is still not known which engine the India-spec model will carry. The T-Roc will directly rival Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
Last but not least, the 7-seater avatar of standard Tiguan, the Volkswagen Tiguan AllSpace will also debut at the 2020 Auto Expo. It will be bigger but retain the styling cues while drawing power from a BS 6 2.0L petrol engine.
