Volkswagen has unveiled the next-gen Jetta at the annual North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The VW Jetta has long been one of the best-selling sedans across the globe with over 17 million units sold worldwide and more than 3.2 million units sold in U.S. market since its first launch in 1979.

Based on Volkswagen’s Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, the all-new 2019 Jetta boasts of bolder and sharper design, offers more interior space and is equipped with more advanced technology in comparison to the outgoing model. It gets 33m longer wheelbase with 10mm and 18mm shorter overhangs at the front and rear, respectively.

The 2019 Jetta comes equipped with VW’s latest MIB instrument cluster along with a 10.2-inch Active Info Display and a brand new dashboard-mounted touchscreen infotainment system that is compatible with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Mirrorlink. It features a large front grille with sharper lines, giving it a premium look and feel.

On the inside, the car gets a fully redesigned interior with a cluster of high-tech features including heated and ventilated front seats, leather seating surfaces, power driver's seat with memory function, dual-zone Climatronic automatic climate control and lots more.

The all-new Jetta will continue to be powered by Volkswagen's 1.4-litre turbocharged, direct-injection TSI petrol engine that develops a maximum power output of 150 hp along with a peak torque of 250 Nm. The power will be transmitted to the front wheels through either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

In spite of being equipped with all the additional premium features and technical specs, the all-new Jetta sedan is priced at US$ 18,545 (INR 11.76 lakh) onwards, cheaper than the outgoing model.

The older generation VW Jetta has been discontinued in India due to the low sales rate. The next-gen model is unlikely to arrive in the Indian market as the American automaker is not supposed to manufacture the sedan for the right-hand-drive countries such as India, South Africa and the UK.
