Volkswagen India is all set to join the sub 4-meter sedan bandwagon with its newly-developed sedan based on the Polo hatchback. It has already been spied testing on the Indian roads by several auto enthusiasts. Volkswagen Polo based sub-compact sedan has been specifically developed for emerging markets like India, Indonesia and many others. India would be the first market to get this sedan as it launched here in the second half of 2015.
If we talk about the exterior appearance of the Polo based sub 4-m sedan, it would be quite identical to Polo and Vento. It would be the company's new entry-level sedan in the country and would enjoy excise cut benefits, due to the length being lesser than 4 meters. Underpinning the same platform as Polo and Vento, it would be uniformly balanced and proportionate. Also, like all the Volkswagen models in the country, it would feature airbags as a standard safety feature.
Volkswagen Polo based compact sedan would borrow the engines and transmissions from the Polo hatchback. It would come in both petrol and diesel guises, with 75PS 1.2L petrol motor and 90PS 1.5L diesel powertrain, respectively. Both these engines would be linked to a 5-speed manual transmission with power being transmitted to the front wheels of the sedan.
It is also believed that Volkswagen might roll out two performance-oriented GT TSI and GT TDI versions of the sedan with a 1.2L turbo petrol engine and the upgraded 1.5L diesel engine at a later stage. The possibilities of a DSG gearbox equipped petrol and diesel variant can also not be ignored. However, the company had been extremely tight-lipped regarding the developments of the compact sedan and not much is known about this sedan.
Even, it is not yet finalized that what it would be named in the Indian market. The Volkswagen sub 4-m sedan would be up against the existing crop of sedans such as Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire.
