Volkswagen India has finally launched the Polo GTI at a sticker price of Rs. 25.99 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi) in the country. The Polo GTI made its India debut at the 2016 Auto Expo, and after months of speculations and deliberations, it has finally arrived in the Indian market. The hot hatch is around Rs. 16 Lakhs more expensive than its arch rival Fiat Abarth Punto, which is retailed at Rs. 9.99 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi). The bookings for the hatchback have already started at company authorized dealer outlets, while deliveries would start shortly.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Michael Mayer – Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said, “The GTI is one of its kind in the performance hatch segment and is designed for the petrol heads who are well versed with the GTI philosophy. It seamlessly blends power with comfort that guarantees performance and an adrenaline packed driving experience. The one who drives a GTI need not to explain anything. He simply drives a statement. Volkswagen GTI remains the icon for all sporty cars and we are extremely proud to bring this phenomenon to India.” It is being learnt that Volkswagen might well introduce the 5-door version of the hatch at a later stage, depending upon the response to the current model.
Adding further, Mr. Mayer said, “At Volkswagen, safety is not an option, but an intrinsic part of the brand. The GTI comes well equipped with 6 airbags, ABS, Hill-hold and ESP and we believe the GTI, will once again set the bar for young Indian car enthusiasts.” Volkswagen Polo GTI would be sold as CBU and just 99 units of the hatch would be retailed for the time being. It has been presented in a 3-door avatar in order to distinguish it from the standard Polo variants. The hatch flaunts LED headlamps and honeycomb mesh front grille with GTI badging, while red accents surrounds the overall body. The Polo GTI gets a set of sportier bumpers, an integrated spoiler and a broader track, while it rides on 16-inch alloy wheels. The hatch is equipped with disc brakes at front and rear, painted in bright red shade.
Under the bonnet, Volkswagen Polo GTI has a 1.8L turbocharged petrol engine which develops 189bhp of top power and 250Nm of peak torque. The engine is linked to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with power being transferred to the front wheels. The company has also incorporated a limited slip differential up front and a revised suspension setup. The hatch sprints to 100kmph mark from standstill in just 7.2 seconds, while clocking a top speed of 233kmph. The Polo GTI is India's first high-performance 3-door hatch and would give the Mini Cooper models a run for their money. Though, exact mileage figures are not known yet but the hatchback is expected to return around 7-8kmpl of fuel economy.
