Up! Yes, with the exclamation mark has exclaimed many markets around the world and India has been one of the keen markets where the small hatchback can do rather well. Chances were grim for Volkswagen to launch a three-door car in the country as the market is yet not ready for such cars but when Volkswagen showcased the Cross Up! Which is a 5-door version of the Up! Chances and expectations of the Indian market hit the sky. Volkswagen is yet to launch an entry level car in a market, which loves small cars and hence, the numbers on the Volkswagen sales figures are not very impressive.
The Cross Up! later appeared in the Frankfurt Motor Show with an announcement from Volkswagen that the German auto major has strong plans to sell the model in upcoming markets across the globe, and India is surely one of the best growing markets in the world.
Volkswagen Cross Up! is based on the three door Up! only bigger and more practical for Indian market. The Cross Up! carries many characteristics of the Volkswagen family cars like the Polo and the Jetta, but the hatchback looks more sporty and more agile with aggressive design lines. The Germans have designed the Cross Up! rather with more simplicity and the rear door looks futuristic and more like Brio.
In countries like India, the production model will be stripped-down a lot to save on costs and interiors would not look as funky as the model on showcase. Many parts will be picked up from the cars like Polo, Vento and Jetta to save the cost. If the Cross Up! makes it to India, it will be a big boon for Volkswagen in the market.
Volkswagen is also missing from the booming compact SUV segment in India! Their player? The Tiguan. Volkswagen Tiguan is macho looking chap and looks like it will be very successful in the Indian segment. The compact SUV from VW will surely rake good numbers in the country as India. In recent past, launches like Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport have become famous in made good numbers for the company, the VW Tiguan might do the same job for the Volkswagen, if launched with the right price tag.
Tiguan carries genes of its bigger brother Toureg in smaller form. Just like every model of Volkswagen, Tiguan will also feature subtle design and no muscular creases on its body. The Tiguan looks smart and with redesigned body, will attract a lot of customers. The simple yet powerful looking Tiguan has been rumored to come to India since last Auto Expo and now, with Auto Expo 2014 around, we sure hope that the German packs it in their consignment.
On the inside, Volkswagen has tried to keep it as simple with best possible quality in the segment. The rear seats can be folded in 60:40 ratio and can also be reclines, well, most of these features seldom make their way to the Indian versions. The equipment list is also long! There would be useful features like the USB Audio System, steering controls and the vehicle will offer tons of space on the inside.
Volkswagen in our best bet would bring the 2.0 TDI and a petrol powered Tiguan, but just like the other models, the petrol model is not expected to get the numbers against its name. Tiguan is offered with 7 engine options in the International market, but in India, the car would not carry so many options, rather it will features engines which are also powering other Volkswagen models in the country without any 4-wheel drive in action.
Volkswagen would put a lot of safety equipment though, – the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), ISOFIX child safety seat anchors and safety optimized headrests are expected with the Tiguan.
