Volkswagen has digitally revealed the all-new Tiguan GTE Active Concept ahead of its global debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Being based on the second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, it would be the first company SUV to be based on the new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture. Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept gets a Plug-in hybrid system with 148 bhp of gasoline engine and two electric motors.
Just so you know, the Plug-in hybrid system in Tiguan GTE Active Concept can supply all four wheels with power, either automatically or at the push of a button. In fact, the SUV would offer off-road performance, even in all-electric mode. The 5-seat concept car is expected to come with a longer wheelbase and 7-seater functionality as well in the American markets. For those asking, the Tiguan GTE Active Concept is also equipped with safety systems such as Front Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking and pedestrian monitoring, an active hood for pedestrian protection, Lane Assist and the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System.
The concept car starts every journey in all-electric E-mode as a zero emissions vehicle. Normally, the rear wheels are driven, but if there is loss of traction, the front wheels are engaged within fractions of a second. Four-wheel-drive is also activated when the driver selects 4MOTION Active Control or when GTE-mode is selected, for instance. The vehicle can cover up to 32 kilometers in all-electric mode. The driving range, based on a battery capacity of 12.4 kWh and a 64 litres fuel tank, is 933 kilometers. The cabin boasts of the updated 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with gesture control and a head-up display.
Under the hood, Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept has a turbocharged and direct-injection TSI petrol engine that produces 148bhp of top power and 250Nm of peak torque, mated to two electric motors. These make 54bhp at the front wheels and 114bhp at the rear. The total system power of 221bhp can supply all four wheels via the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. The engine is mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch (DSG) automatic transmission that was specially designed for hybrid use, with the front electric motor being housed inside the casing.
