Volkswagen India has started the production of Tiguan SUV at its Aurangabad manufacturing unit in Maharashtra. The commencement of production suggets that the SUV might be launched in the Indian market sooner than expected, i.e. perhaps April 2017. Volkswagen Tiguan had its first public appearance in India at the 2016 Auto Expo in February last year. The introduction of Tiguan would mark the German automaker's entry into the SUV segment, which is already dominated by the likes of Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, and yet-to-be-launched Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Compass.
Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said, “We are delighted to introduce one of our most successful global products to the Indian market. The Tiguan will be our premium SUV offering for India and will cater to the unceasing demand in the segment. Our customers will now have an extended portfolio, ranging from hatchback to executive sedan, to meet their requirements at our showrooms.” In the European markets, the second-generation Volkswagen Tiguan is already the best-selling SUV in its segment. Volkswagen would also launch the Passat hybrid sedan in the country in and around July this year to challenge the dominance of Toyota Camry hybrid and Honda Accord hybrid.
The Tiguan SUV would be offered with a 2.0L 4-cylinder TDI diesel powerplant, mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox, confirmed the company in an official statement. The diesel engine is expected to belt out 190bhp of top power and 400Nm of peak torque. Initially, there would be no petrol variant available of the SUV in India. Also, it is still unknown that whether the 4MOTION AWD system would be offered with the range-topping variant or not. The Tiguan is expected to be priced in a range of Rs. 25-30 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom).
