The 2020 Auto Expo might witness a few misses given the ongoing industry slowdown, however, the German car-making giant Volkswagen is all set to create a buzz at the event with the unveiling of three new SUVs.
Volkswagen Passenger Cars director, Steffen Knapp had earlier confirmed that the brand will be turned into an SUV brand in India. He also stated that SUVs are the number one priority for India, more than any other country. The three SUVs to be unveiled at the event are – T-Roc, T-Cross and Tiguan AllSpace.
The T-Roc will go on to become the second SUV in Volkswagen India’s lineup apart from the Tiguan, upon its launch. It will solely be offered with a 1.5-liter TSI engine in India, which will come mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox.
In terms of dimensions, the T-Roc will be similarly sized as the compact SUVs in India, including Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, etc. However, in terms of price, the VW car will likely put up against mid-size SUVs like Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson.
The second SUV to be unveiled at the biennial auto show will be the T-Cross, which will be the second SUV to be launched by the German carmaker in India next year. The UK-spec T-Cross is marginally smaller than the T-Roc, but expect the Indian version of the car to gain a few inches when it comes to India.
Expect the car to come powered by the same 1.5-liter TSI engine as the T-Roc, albeit in a detuned state, as well as a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged unit. The T-Cross will directly rival compact SUVs in India, both in terms of size as well as price.
Volkswagen Tiguan AllSpace
The third VW SUV to be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo will be the Tiguan AllSpace, which is a long-wheelbase version of the Tiguan. The AllSpace will be 226 mm longer and have a 110 mm longer wheelbase as compared to the regular Tiguan, currently the only SUV to be offered by the German manufacturer in India.
