Snapshot: Volkswagen XL1 is being showcased at Design Museum, London to win Design of the Year award in transport design category

The world's most-efficient car, Volkswagen XL1, is being showcased at Design Museum, London in the race to win Design of the Year award for this year. The reputed international Design of the Year exhibition is in its 7th edition and is divided in seven categories- Architecture, Digital, Fashion, Furniture, Graphic, Product and Transport design to acclaim excellence from across the world. The XL1 features in the Transport design category, selected by author and automotive design and technology expert, Andrew Nahum.

The Volkswagen XL1, plug-in hybrid development which we can also call as the future of mobility as it delivers the astounding mileage of 100km for 0.9litres and has an emission figure of 21 g/km of Co2. The car is powered by a 800cc two-cylinder diesel engine that produces power of 48 PS combined with a 27 PS of electric motor. Transmission duty gets done by a 7-Speed dual clutch gearbox. The surprising mileage figure is the courtesy of brilliant aerodynamic engineering.

The coefficient drag of the XL1 is just 0.189 which is achieved by constructing the car in tear down shape with several other major measures taken like traditional outer rear view mirrors being replaced with small digital cameras displaying the rear view on a dash-mounted screen. Even the air fins for engine cooling at front open only when required to keep the drag low.

Volkswagen showcased the first prototype of XL1 in 2002 and after a long span of 12 years, the XL1 reached the production stage in 2013. The production of the XL1 is limited to 250 units, out of which 50 were already built last year while the rest 200 cars production are scheduled to start from the second quarter of this calendar year. Volkswagen will sell the XL1 exclusively in the European market to be priced at 11,000 euros.
