We earlier told you that Volkswagen would debut an all-new compact sedan in India, which would measure less than 4 meters in length. Now, it is being learnt that Volkswagen's compact sedan would have its premiere at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo in February. Being codenamed as ‘ICS’ (Indian Compact Sedan), it would be introduced in both petrol as well as diesel guise with engines borrowed from the Polo hatchback. The cabin elements are expected to be shared with Polo and Vento as well, while it rivals Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire.
Speaking to IAB, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for the Development Division, confirmed that the compact sedan made specifically for India would be unveiled at the 2016 Expo. Just so you know, Dr. Neusser was interacting with media at the recently concluded Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) in Germany on the eve of VW Group Night. Being based on the Polo platform, it would be “classical sub-4 sedan”, as told by Dr. Neusser. However, it is still not known whether it would carry the same wheelbase as Polo, but one thing is certain that it wouldn't be a notchback. Contrary to earlier reports, it is expected to come with a smaller boot, like its contemporaries Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest. For those wondering, the compact sedan would be placed between Polo and Vento and could be named Volkswagen Bora.
Mechanically, the new compact sedan would be presented in both petrol and diesel fuel trims. The petrol variants are likely to be powered by the Polo's 1.2L, 3-cylinder MPI engine, while the 1.5L, 4-cylinder TDI motor would be at the helm for diesel variants. Both these powertrains are already on offer with the Polo hatchback. Both these engines would come mated to manual gearbox as standard, while an automatic transmission might also be in offing; nothing confirmed, though. The sedan has been spied quite a few times as test mule in the country and the German automaker, in all likelihood, would price it aggressively. Expect the pricing to start at Rs. 5 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom). For your information, Volkswagen would launch 4 new products in India in the next 2 years, which include new Passat saloon, new-generation Beetle, Indian Compact Sedan and 2016 Tiguan 7-seater SUV.
