The German automaker, Volkswagen, has vouchsafed the details about its new-generation 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine. The new efficient yet more powerful power plant, codenamed as EA288, will power the new Passat, Jetta, Beetle and Golf which all are due to debut in the US market in the second half of 2014.

The 2015 2.0-litre TDI engine produces power of 150 BHP (10 BHP more than current version) with torque generation of 320 Nm. However, the engine will come in several more powerful set of tunes as per its model segmentation. No need to mention, the engine will power all VW Group's counterparts post its introduction inside the aforementioned models.

The engineers at VW have reconstructed the engine majorly to make it more refined yet efficient with modifications like a more complex exhaust gas recirculation system and intercooler integrated into the intake manifold. Even, the new engine shares only the bore spacing with its outgoing version. Friction level are minimised with low-friction bearings for the camshaft and balancer shafts, piston rings that have less pre-tension and the oil pump which is a two-stage device with volumetric flow regulation.

Interestingly, Volkswagen holds 75 per cent of the diesel car market in US which company is expecting to go skyward with this new engine. In India, we might witness the new 2.0-litre TDI powering the next-generation of Audi A4 and A6 which both are expected to reach our shores around the end of next calendar year.
