Volvo Auto India has announced that it would launch the V40 hatchback on June 17, 2015 in the country. Just so you know, the crossover variant Volvo V40 Cross Country of the standard V40 hatchback is already on sale in India. Volvo V40 hatch's exterior designing would be quite identical to its crossover sibling; however, it would lose out on some of the sporty elements such as full body plastic cladding and rear spoiler.
The interior cabin of the V40 hatchback is also expected to be carried over from the Cross Country version. However, the hatchback would be quite high on safety quotient and boast several first-class safety features as standard. It would be sold as Completely Built Unit (CBU) in India and hence, the pricing is expected to be a bit high - somewhere in range of Rs. 25-35 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom). It is being said that Volvo V40 would be the Swedish automaker's most affordable car in the country. It would be launched in both petrol and diesel fuel trims to counter the dominance of Mercedes-Benz A-Class and BMW 1-Series in the luxury hatchback segment.
Mechanically, Volvo V40 would be the most powerful car in its segment as the 2.0L, 4-cylinder D3 diesel engine would pump out 152PS of maximum power and 320Nm of peak torque. Volvo’s new Drive-E family of 2.0L engines has already been seen in the XC60 and S60 and this engine has been de-tuned for the V40 hatchback. The hatch would have a 6-speed automatic transmission, which would send the power to the front wheels. As for the petrol guise, the Volvo V40 hatch would come with the same T4 petrol engine, that are available with its Cross Country sibling. However, it is still unclear whether Volvo would launch both the petrol and diesel variants together or over a gap of few months.
