Volkswagen blew us away last year when they took the wraps off the Golf R400 concept and a while back they confirmed a production version is in the works. Now, French media is reporting availability will as very few units will actually be built and with a price to match as the report specifies it will turn out to be pricier than the Audi RS3 Sportback.

While the concept got the “R400” designation from its 400 bhp output, this could change for the production version which is expected to offer as much as 420 bhp, thus a Golf R420 name is possible. Details are scarce regarding what will power the car as although the concept came with a turbocharged four-cylinder, 2.0-liter unit, some are saying the road-ready version will make the switch to a five-cylinder, 2.5-liter sourced from the aforementioned RS3.

The identity of the gearbox also remains a mystery since the concept’s six-speed DSG is not suitable to handle 450 Nm of torque so Volkswagen’s engineers have to think of something else which will have to be reliable for the production car. Regardless of engine and gearbox, it’s safe to assume the Volkswagen Golf R420 is going to come as standard with a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

It will turn out to be the fastest and most powerful production Golf ever made in the model’s long-running history. The concept rocketed to 100 kmph in 3.9 seconds and was able to achieve an electronically-limited top speed of 280 kmph, but the production car’s performance could be a tad different although obviously in the same ballpark.

It will be a while until the Golf R420 will see the light of day as the report mentions it’s going to be based on the facelifted Golf VII due to come out sometime in 2017. It’s unknown whether the range-topping version will be out immediately with the rest of the range or Volkswagen will decide to wait a bit to unveil their crown jewel.
