Stefan Pierer, KTM CEO, on the occasion of RC390 and RC200 launch confirmed that Duke 690 will not make its way to India. Hints were given that it will be discontinued from global market soon too. Instead a twin cylinder 800 cc engine will replace the existing single cylinder 690cc mill.
This is a heartbreak news for many fans of KTM around India who were waiting for a bigger capacity bike after 390 launch. The 500-800 cc market is still not very well tapped in India with only a couple of products available in this segment like Ninja 650 and Hyosung 650. KTM had a real chance to penetrate this market segment seeing all the success they gained in 200 and 400 cc category.
The new motor will be developed in association with Bajaj Auto and will be a double cylinder engine, a different ball game for KTM all together. KTM Duke 690 is a popular bike among youngsters but it was also widely criticized for being not too refined as its rivals. The new bike will be launched somewhere in 2016 and the launch will follow the pattern of 200 and 390. A naked bike will be launched first followed by the faired version. We suppose that the new bike will be named 790 going by the engine capacity.
But you will have to wait long for the product. Till that time you can see the recent development from KTM here.
