Yamaha Motor India is getting ready to launch its new MT-15 naked bike based on the Yamaha R15. The introduction of this new naked motorcycle would broaden the horizon for Yamaha and open its doors for naked motorcycle enthusiasts and potential buyers looking for more options.
And the naked Yamaha MT-15 bike was spied testing in India recently. It shares key specs from its fully-faired sibling, the R15 V3.
This new Yamaha motorcycle borrows its frame and mechanical configuration from Yamaha’s fully-faired R15 V3 motorcycle and its design and style are influenced by the aggressive and huge MT series of street fighter bikes.
Taken from the Yamaha R15, the Yamaha MT-15 naked bike houses the 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled fuel-injected motor, which churns 19.3 PS of max power and 15 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a slip-assist clutch.
The Yamaha MT-15 will appeal those who like the feel of the R15 V3, however, would still prefer an upright and relaxed riding position. Yamaha’s new compact naked bike features a sharp fuel tank, stylish tail, stepped seats, beefy tyres and slick twin LED headlights.
India bound MT-15 model will miss out on USD in the front, unlike the MT-15 in Thailand which comes fitted with an upside-down telescopic front fork as on the R15 V3. The MT-15, just like the R15 would get the conventional telescopic forks for the Indian market to cut costs, unlike the USD feature in the global market. Additional design and style changes are included to further save costs, like unique alloys, fuel tank, simple tailpiece and belly pan etc.
In India, we can expect the MT-15 to come with dual channel ABS, which positions it between the 200cc bikes like the Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 and KTM Duke. But its strong power-to-weight ratio would help prove the new naked Yamaha bike to be a strong contender.
In terms of pricing, the Yamaha MT-15 is expected to cost almost the same as the R15 V3 which is sold for Rs 1.27 lakhs (non-ABS model) and Rs 1.39 lakh (dual ABS model, ex-showroom).
