Yamaha R3 Imported into the Country for R&D!

Snapshot: Yamaha has imported 2 R3's for testing purpose in India!

It has been quiet a wait, getting clarification on what will come to India, the Yamaha YZF-R25, the YZF-R3 or both. Our regular readers would know, that the R25 has been a huge sales success in Indonesia where it was launched first, globally. It was a bike that Yamaha needed to make after the very capable R15.  The 250cc twin-cylinder liquid cooled engine on the R25 produces 31 PS of power and 22.6 Nm of torque that gets transferred to the road via a six-speed transmission.

While there was some doubt if Yamaha would be able to price the R25 sensibly enough to compete with the likes of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the KTM RC390 when launched in India as the R25 is only manufactured in Indonesia, as it would incur import duties, if imported. However, there have been reports flying around that Yamaha may bring the R25 to India around 2015 end, but, there is no confirmation by Yamaha on either the availability of the R25 or the R3 in our market anytime soon.

Recently, According to import and export tracking website of India,, the Japanese company has imported two units of the Yamaha R3 motorcycle for R&D purposes. The R3 had its public premiere at the EICMA 2014 in Milan Italy. The R3 houses a 321 cc in-line two-cylinder engine that is capable of producing 42 PS of power and 29.6 Nm of torque, transferred to the road via a six-speed transmission. The R3 uses technology that’s been derived from racing, such as, direct drive camshaft, carburized conrods, forged pistons and low friction pistons. All these help the R3 in putting out some serious performance in its class.

We believe R3 is a better choice for the Indian market as it has enough performance and technology to compete with the likes of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the KTM RC390. Although. importing the bike as a CKD would make the Yamaha cost significantly higher than the RC390. We reckon, Yamaha would want to go the local manufacturing route to have a real neck to neck fight with the KTM.
