Yamaha in India is known as a performance oriented brand. All the bikes it offers fall in the performance category and price and fuel-efficiency are two things Yamaha is not known for. To break away from the image and to increase its share of the market, Yamaha is now planning to launch an entry level motorcycle in India which will sell for $500 (Rs 30,000) approximately. The company however did not reveal much about the time frame of the motorcycle.

"The project is on. At this time we are not sure if the end product will cost US $500, less or more. But we are working on the project keeping US $500 as the benchmark price. We are trying our best," Toshikazu Kobayashi, Managing Director - R&D, Yamaha Motor India said. He did not say anything about this bike's availability overseas though. Commenting on this Asano Masaki, CEO and Managing Director - Sales, Yamaha Motor India said, "It is too early to comment as we don't know when it will be out but would like to add that India would be the first market for the product."

Yamaha sold 32% more bikes between January and May than last year, but still is way behind the leaders like Hero MotoCorp and Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI). This year, Yamaha aims at selling 6 lakh units as compared to 4.47 lakh units it sold last year.
