  • Yamaha has filed a patent for 'WR155' moniker.
  • Yamaha already has WR125, WR250 and WR450.
  • Yamaha WR155 to have YZF-R15 V3.0's 155cc engine.

Yamaha is working on a multi-purpose motorcycle, purportedly named as 'WR155', for the Indian market. The motorcycle in question here is based on the YZF-R15 platform with a few tweaks to match the needs. The R15 architecture has already spawned several new bikes for Yamaha. Basking in the success of R15, MT-15 and XSR155, the Japanese bikemaker has filed a patent for 'WR155' moniker in the Indonesian market.

Although not much has been known about this new product yet but going by the WR series in global markets, it can be stated that it will be dual-purpose bikes like the 125 cc, 250 cc and a 450 cc models. The company is trying to bridge the gap between 125cc and 250cc by introducing a 155cc model. Yamaha will also make certain changes to the Deltabox frame in order to accommodate the off-roading abilities of the bike. The design cues would be taken from the bigger WR series motorcycles with higher ground clearance and exhaust pipe.

Mechanically, it could borrow the YZF-R15 V3.0's 155cc single-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Actuation. This engine develops top power of 19bhp and peak torque of 14.7Nm, while paired to a 6-speed gearbox. If this transmission at all makes a way in the WR155, then the gear ratios are set to be changed. ABS is expected to be offered as a standard feature. It cannot be said when the bike will be launched as the company has just filed a patent and it will take at least two good years even before the production starts.
