3 things to know about Aprilia SR150
Snapshot: The SR150 as revealed by the company is India’s first scooter to deliver a motorcycle sensation in a scooter. It’s riding dynamics, character and aggressive power delivery will surely make it one of the most fun scooter to ride
We got many surprises at the AutoExpo this year, some of them were okay but some of them were real tasty. It is not necessary for a vehicle to be extraordinarily costly to impress on lookers. Some of them did that by their design and others by their purpose. The best example being Honda Navi that left everyone impressed, still the most budget friendly two-wheeler one can imagine of. There were a couple of more unveils that had every one’s jaws dropped like and one of the most noticeable of them was the Aprilia SR150. Excitement picked up real pace when its launch plans were announced for the Indian market.
A few days back, Piaggio once again shook the market by announcing the price at which it will be offered at. By its composure everyone expected that SR150 will certainly be priced above Rs 80,000 to 90,000. But everyone be drastically wrong, Rs 65,000 for an Aprilia? Seriously? The deal already sounded so sweet that for once I thought of selling my 200 Duke and buying it, but my colleague’s reaction on the same made me realise perhaps it won’t be very intelligent thing to cut 14 horses straight away just for the namesake. So let’s cut to the chase and talk about what makes the Aprilia SR150 such a sweet deal indeed.
- It’s an Italian exotic!
The name says it all, it’s an Aprilia. The same company that manufactures one of the most heroic supersports motorcycles present on planet earth, period. Its racing prowess has made it a prominent name in the racing world. So make no mistake, Aprilia knows how to put a soul in its two wheelers.
- It is a Motoscooter!
The SR150 as revealed by the company is India’s first scooter to deliver a motorcycle sensation in a scooter. It’s riding dynamics, character and aggressive power delivery will surely make it one of the most fun scooter to ride. It is powered by 150cc single-cylinder powertrain pushing out 11.4bhp and 11.5Nm that is also seen on the Vespa range. The engine is mated to a CVT transmission unlike most Vespas. The scooter no doubt looks great with the front 14-inch alloy wheels that look really sporty in the black paint. It also has a 220mm disc at the front that takes cares of braking part and 140mm drum at the rear, nothing outlandish.
- It isn’t priced as an Italian exotic!
We’ve already discussed it above that it indeed is a very special deal when it comes to pricing. But now let’s consider which scooters it is going to face in order to become a hit in a market which sure is one of the world’s most competitive scooter markets.
Its greatest rival will be no one but Honda Activa 125 and trust us, Aprilia will really have to work hard, really hard in order to give the Activa a tough competition. Activa is officially world’s most loved scooter and the fact that it dethroned India’s highest selling two-wheeler Hero Splendor proves it. It’s simple, Indians love it because it is reliable, looks good and rides great. But the Aprilia SR150 perhaps is a bit too aggressive, too sporty design for Indians to like, perhaps they will love it or not, time will tell. Speaking on a personal level, we will always lean towards the Aprilia SR150 instead of India’s most loved scooter.
