Audi A5 expert review

Audi A5 expert review

Snapshot: Audi’s high on style, A5 saloon, is a great choice for people who prefer style and substance

If you’ve always liked the A4 and A6 saloons but wanted a car with a little more style and pizzazz, then the new A5 sportback is for you. It’s essentially a stretched version of the A4 but with a stylish sloping roof to give it more dynamic looks on the outside. Here’s why the new A5 is a great choice as your next luxury car.

Exteriors

The face of the new A5 is typically Audi. The big hexagonal grille up front is the main attraction on the face. An Audi trademark style for many years now, it gets a generous dose of chrome all across. The headlamps with projector lamps in them look cool too. The sharply styled front bumper adds loads of personality. That said, from the front end you could mistake it for an A4 or A6 or any other Audi saloon for that matter.

It is the side profile, where the real difference is immediately visible. The rear with its sloping roofline is the highlight of this package. It stands out on the road and is sure to turn many heads. The dynamic turn indicators also add to the sense of visual drama all around.

Interiors

It seems whoever has designed the cabin has done so at leisure and had great time at hand. There isn’t a single point that you can call weak, in terms of quality that is. This cabin will simply wow you with its sheer build quality. You will also enjoy the Bang and Olufsen stereo system as well as Audi’s virtual cockpit gauges. All materials are excellent to touch. The buttons, especially have a nice and tactile feel. The MMI system is easy and intuitive to operate as well.

The seats offer excellent comfort all across. Surprisingly, even the back seat has plenty of headroom for even six-footers, especially considering that the roof slopes at the back.

Engine, performance and gearbox

The familiar 2-litre diesel engine which does duty on a range of Audi cars here in India is seen here again. This engine makes 190bhp, and does 0-100kph in around 7 seconds. The 7-speed automatic gearbox makes light work of acceleration. This gearbox is quick witted and the slightest tug at the flappy pedals behind the wheel ensure a quick shift.

This engine is also very quiet inside the cabin. Audi has ensured excellent cabin isolation. There is hardly any wind, tyre or engine noise inside, making the A5 a great long distance cruiser. The engine has a hint of lag below 1,700 rpm but once past it, it build momentum very quickly. What you will also enjoy is the flexibility. While doing speeds in excess of 100kph on the highway, the engine is spinning at 1,500-1,600rpm, making the cabin a relaxing place to be in. In fact, you will feel that the engine is simply idling.

Ride and handing

The A5 offers a supple ride and manages to eat up most bumps at all speeds. Some of the sharpest road crevices can be felt as a distant ‘thump’ inside the cabin. Overall, ride comfort is exemplary.

The steering offers decent feedback and is accurate for the most part. Even though it doesn’t have a lot of weight, it offers plenty of feedback. Yes, it’s not the sharpest tool around but more than adequate to put a smile on a keen driver’s face.

Summary

The A5 is a great all-rounder, offering a fuel efficient yet powerful engine, plenty of style and a very comfortable cabin. It’s a car that is sure to win friends in the luxury car club.
