First impression - Yamaha YZF-R1S
Snapshot: R1S weighs 9 pounds more than the R1 and is $1500 cheaper
Yamaha has recently introduced a bit cheaper variant of the YZF-R1 (currently only for the US market) christened as YZF-R1S. As we mentioned the new R1S is bit cheaper than R1, it is priced $1500 less than the R1 which retails at $16490. You must be wondering if this is a cheaper variant of the R1 then it is supposed to be different in terms of mechanicals and cosmetics but it isn’t. R1S look exactly the same and infact there is no ‘S’ branding tagged on the R1S for anyone to know if it’s a R1 or R1S.
Yamaha trimmed $1500 from the R1 by introducing some changes like replacing some of the exotic metals (titanium and magnesium) used in the standard R1 with less-expensive aluminium and steel, the major changes done was in the engine, the company replaced the titanium connecting rods with the steel ones, also the outer parts and fasteners like the oil pan and right-side engine covers are replaced from magnesium to aluminium. Apart from this, the wheels on the R1S are made of aluminium instead of magnesium and the tyres are now OEM-spec Bridgestone Battlax S20 sport instead of the track-day-intentioned RS10s. The new R1S still has the same MotoGP-inspired electronics of the standard R1 but only feature missing is the quickshifter. Yamaha has decided to remove quickershifter as a standard feature from R1S that helped the Japanese motorcycle maker to further decrease the cost of R1S. Apart from this the electronic package is still the same that means, it comes with six-axis IMU, three different power modes, adjustable traction control, slide control, launch control, and wheelie (lift) control.
