Harley-Davidson Street Rod – 750km Test Ride

Harley-Davidson Street Rod – 750km Test Ride

Snapshot: We took the Harley-Davidson Street Rod to Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh. Read on to know how was our experience riding the Street Rod to hills.

The new Street Rod comes out as one of the most recent launches from the legendary American motorcycle company, Harley-Davidson. We already tested the bike a few weeks back, but to do a more comprehensive review and to put the new Street Rod to real test we had to come up with a better plan. So we decided to give our usual review schedule a twist and planned out a motorcycle trip on the new Street Rod. Since it is one of the sportiest Harleys out there, the only option we had in mind was of the winding Himachal roads, and so we obliged to our instincts and hence began with our road trip on the Street Rod.

But the destination was yet not clear since we’ve already done the Shimla route a couple of times in the past, one of the team members suggested that we follow the same route but take the diversion Dharampur that leads to Kasauli. And that’s how we came up with the idea of this destination.

Since Kasauli is almost 350kms from Gurgaon, it was wise to start early morning and so we did. With the throttle pinned up at times, it didn’t take us more than 4 hours to touch Chandigarh, riding on the NH 44 which is one of the most well laid out highways in India. The Street Rod felt happy riding at the peak power all the time. It doesn’t rattle or does anything that might make a rider feel insecure while doing triple digits. It is always lunging forward with a strong surge of torque wave that makes it fun on the open roads. The only thing that concerned me was my riding position, as besides looking funny it also started numbing my behind after just 3 hours of continuous riding.

I am jealous of the folks living in Chandigarh, it’s not just because it is a really nice place to live but it’s also just an hour drive away from the Himalayas. Himalayan Express Way starts from Chandigarh and extends all the way to the hills. Some of the parts of the highway are currently under construction as it is getting widened seeing the huge footfall it receives year on year.

The flat straight roads then converted into twists and turns and it gets thrilling as you go up the way. The Street Rod has been designed to be athletic on its feet. It is not like the traditional cruisers and it is far from being lazy. It has the stamina to rule the corners with confidence and it can do it all day long. It not only matched our expectations of how brilliantly it handles on the curves but exceeded them by miles.

As soon as we took the diversion before Dharampur, the road started to get worse. This helped us understand that the bike’s suspension setup prefers handling over anything else and that doesn’t help much on the bad patches. From this point, Kasauli wasn’t much far away, and it was just a matter of minutes and we were there.

Street Rod was serious fun on the corners and it totally blew us away the way it managed to lean in and rocket out of curve after curve. But at the same time, you cannot ignore that your upper body is stretched forward while your legs are also in the same direction. And that might not be supremely relaxing on long rides. But overall, the Street Rod comes out as a bike that is much more than just a cruiser, it is a revelation. It is not built for everyone but only for the young at heart.
