Honda City – Long term review – First report

Few cars have defined a segment the way the Honda City has defined the midsize sedan space. It is the very definition of what a midsize sedan should be. No wonder that for the past two decades this is the best-selling car in its segment. We’ve borrowed the CVT automatic version from Honda to figure out what makes the City such a treat to buyers.

What we like –

In our first month we have already been impressed with its petrol engines performance. The 1.5-litre unit makes about 115bhp and is ultra-responsive too. The City has become the new standard for a driver’s sedan in the category. We really like it, a lot. The sharp steering and agile chassis means that even the keenest of keen drivers won’t find reasons to complain. Its steering wheel also feels a lot more precise than its main rival, the Maruti Ciaz.

Our staffers also came to appreciate the fuel economy, which at around 11.5kmpl in the city is very respectable.

Its interior is certainly an attractive place to spend time in. It’s appealing, and loaded with storage bins and the like. If you enjoy travelling those long distances you will also appreciate the back seat, which is easily the best in its segment for support, space as well as comfort. We would stretch our necks and say that it is the Honda City which is the segment best for sheer back seat comfort. In the back, we found so much space that even our lankiest of passengers will have sufficient head and knee-room.

What could be better –

The AC control touchscreen system has a tendency to soil rather easily and is a major finger print magnet. This becomes especially evident if you have a fussy co-passenger constantly wanting to change the temperature in Delhi’s current heat. We could also appreciate if Honda would think of adding Apple CarPlay on the stereo system since most other manufacturers already have it. It’s not a major issue but can be an added convenience on such a class leading product.

Overall -

We continue to remain impressed with the new City. Even in the face of fresher rivals, it remains a strong package as ever and one of the best if not the best midsize sedan to buy. Watch out for more reports as the City extends its time in our fleet.
