The international launch of the F-Pace was a watershed moment in Jaguar’s illustrious history. After making and successfully selling sportscars and sedans for many decades, the English carmaker finally gave into market pressures by launching its first ever SUV. But does the F-Pace have what it takes to take away buyers from more established rivals? The answer is an emphatic yes and you will find out why below here.

Exteriors

As soon as you walk into a Jaguar showroom and lay your eyes on the F-Pace you will simply love its lines all across. The face is immediately recognisable as a Jaguar. The big grille and sharply styled headlamps give it a very unique look and a dominating road presence. The side profile with its pronounced wheel arches and big wheels gives it plenty of muscle too. The car simply looks stunning to say the least. The rear with its slightly sloping roof and F-Type lamps looks unique and very appealing too. Out of all other rivals, the F-Pace really does stand out and makes a strong case in the style department.

Interiors

The design of the SUV reminds you of a fighter cockpit with all controls wrapped around the driver. You will also enjoy the leather detailing on the top-spec version of the car. For added drama, the circular gear lever pops out every time you start the car. The digital gauges will remind you of the Audi virtual cockpit theme.

That said, some will moan that the quality isn’t in the same league as the German rivals while some may also find fault with the touch screen infotainment. It a bit lazy to respond and also not the most intuitive system on the market.

The seats offer great comfort though and the rear occupants will enjoy loads of leg and headroom. Boot space is abundant too, and Jaguar have given buyers a full sized spare wheel.

Engine, performance and gearbox

You can choose two diesel engine options and both of them are phenomenal. The 2-litre diesel is the saner choice though because it will deliver good economy as well. The 177-bhp of power is all the power you will need with this car. Mid-range power delivery is terrific and refinement levels are good too. Even when you rev the engine hard most occupants will not be able to tell if it’s a diesel or a petrol powering the car.

The eight speed automatic gearbox is a joy to use even in manual settings. There is no lag when you shift gears.

Ride and handling

Jaguar engineers should be proud of what they have achieved with the new F-Pace. It feels just as good and fun to drive as a sporty sedan. The handling is crisp and belies the car’s girth. Push it around corners and there is limited body roll. The stiff suspension though doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable when doing slow city speeds. Jaguar has managed a nice blend between ride and comfort. This car can travel carrying good speeds over the worst of worst conditions and you will not feel jittery at all.

Summary

The great looks, loads of space inside and plenty of road presence along with capable engines makes the Jaguar F-Pace one of the best if not the best SUV in its price range.
