Polaris Slingshot - the latest 'three-wheeler' from Polaris - gets unveiled
Snapshot: Slingshot is half-car, half-motorcycle in terms of safety and performance
How often have you craved for a little more safety on a power packed motorcycle? Many companies around the world have introduced different features and technologies to make the 'motorcycle fun' a little more safe. However, Polaris has gone a step further by introducing an 'extra wheeled' motorcycle. The three-wheeled roadster will be driven by a Ford, 2.4 litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with a five-speed gearbox. The Slingshot will be rear wheel driven which will happen because of the Carbon fibre belt that will rotate it. These specifications might change in the production model but that is highly unlikely to happen. Another technical benefits include Antilock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control, Electronic Brake Distribution and Vehicle Stability Control.
Slingshot has a steering wheel, no doors, very low Centre of Gravity (CoG) and a plastic body (which does not make it look very premium). Polaris is expected to release the figures, that are still missing from the scene, next Sunday which should sum up the entire information that is needed to like or dislike this trike from Polaris.
The Polaris Slingshot will come with a price tag of $ 19,999 (Rs 12 lakhs) for the base model and should deliver an expected 173bhp of power at the crank at 6,200rpm and 225Nm of torque at 4,700rpm. The Slingshot is very low slung with just five inches of ground clearance and weighs around 782.5kgs (wet) which should make it very firm and grounded on the tarmac. In most of the states in USA (where it will go into production this fall) the Slingshot is considered as a motorcycle by the laws which means you will have to wear a helmet while riding it. Whatever it is, Polaris has done something that none of the big players in the market dared to do and that too on such a scale. Slingshot is a technical marvel and, as it looks, made to prove a point which Polaris has done already. And with a sales network of 1,700 dealers in USA, it might pick up sales much more in numbers than we expect.
