UM - Lohia JV to bring 300-500cc Cruisers in 2015!
Snapshot: UM Motorcycles is developing an all-new powertrain in 300-500cc space that will be launched on the new cruiser set for launch in the second quarter of 2015!
First showcased at Auto Expo 2014, the UM portfolio did get a fair amount of attraction from the Indian crowds. The Renegade Series, which is UM's range of Cruiser motorcycles was the pick of the lot , with its heavy muscular styling.
We previously reported here that the United States based two wheeler manufacturer, United Motorcycles (UM Motorcycles) have entered a 50:50 joint venture with the Indian electric two-wheeler manufacturer, Lohia Auto group, to produce the bikes locally at the manufacturing facility located at Kashipur, Uttrakhand. The production will start around the second quarter of 2015 and will see an annual capacity of 1,00,000 units.
UM Motorcycles will be getting the complete range of their motorcycles in India with an investment of about Rs 120 crore and they have already invested a part of the amount for the manufacturing facility's production and R&D purposes. UM will offer the range starting from UM Xtreet, which like the name suggests, is a street bike, Renegade cruiser range, including the Renegade Commando and Renegade Limited, Renegade Sports and Renegade Duty.
UM Motorcycles is developing an all-new powertrain in 300-500cc space that will be launched on the new cruiser set for launch in the second quarter of 2015. UM now, will be arriving on Indian shores with a new flagship motorcycle in the 300-500cc medium displacement motorcycle segment during the second quarter of 2015. Having originally announced that the company will enter the Indian market in the 200-230cc segment, Um has had a change of heart it seems, as the manufacturer seems to have shifted its priorities otherwise. This also hints that the company is developing an all-new high displacement powertrain that could be exclusively offered in India on the new cruiser.
The company’s current flagship offering is the Renegade Commando cruiser that draws power from a 223cc engine. Details on the new high displacement motor is still unknown, but the model will be competing against the offerings from Royal Enfield in terms of engine displacement, with prices expected to undercut the competition.
This brings some really interesting turn of events since Royal Enfield has basically never had a competition in the market, and if UM-Lohia can pull off good quality in build and finish from the beginning, then we might just have some cool motorcycles to compete against the Iconic Royal Enfield's.
