About Renault Cars

Renault, officially known as Groupe Renault, is a 119-year-old French multinational automobile manufacturing conglomerate registered under the Société anonyme in France, which means joint-stock or share company. The Renault company is an engine and vehicle manufacturer with its products spread across commercial sedans/passenger cars, SUVs, crossover SUVs, MPVs/ MUVs, hatchbacks, and events like Formula One, Formula E and rallying. Its headquarters are based in Boulogne-Billancourt, near Paris, France.

Three brothers of the Renault family, Louis, Marcel and Fernand, founded the Renault Corporation in 1899. After its launch, Renault consistently produced cars using the engine that they purchased from the automobile company - De Dion-Bouton. Four years after its  birth, Renault began manufacturing its own engines and stopped purchasing from other companies. In 1905, just 6 years after starting out in the industry, Renault got the opportunity to sell its vehicles on a large scale when a French company Société des Automobiles de Place purchased the Renault AG1 to establish a fleet of taxis. Within two years, Renault became one of the largest manufacturers of taxis in London and Paris.

20th Century

Renault focussed on producing cargo trucks and buses as the signs of an imminent World War emerged. At the crux of World War I, Renault began manufacturing ammunitions and military aircraft engines for Rolls-Royce (Rolls-Royce engine had a Renault V8 unit). After the First World War  ended, Renault resumed the manufacturing of commercial vehicles and started producing agricultural and industrial machinery as well. Renault also began producing luxury vehicles, like limousines, which competed with the likes of the infamous Cadillac V-12 and Cadillac V-16. In 1931, Renault decided to install diesel fuel systems in its commercial vehicles. Renault faced tough competition and was surpassed by another French automaker, Citroën, as the largest car producer in France.

The World War II had a severe and negative impact on the company as the chaos, politics and pressure due to the war led to the dismissal and incarceration of Louis Renault. After the war ended, the entire company underwent restructuring and revived itself from the aftermath. From the 1950s till the 1990s, Renault kept producing quality automobiles and expanding its reach across Europe,  North America and parts of South America.

After it was privatized in 1996, Renault began venturing into the East European and South American markets as well as in East Asia. In 1999, Renault and Nissan signed a first-of-its kind alliance between a French and a Japanese automobile company. It also bought a majority stake in Dacia, a Romanian automaker. A year later, Renault acquired a significant stake in the Samsung group’s automobile division and formed Renault Samsung Motors. The 2000 Renault Laguna was the second European car to feature a keyless ignition and entry. In 2010, Renault-Nissan alliance was extended as Daimler AG was introduced into the alliance.

In the last decade, Renault new launch models like Renault Duster  hit big in every market in the world and gained immense fame and reputation. They established their brand and manufacturing units in several countries across three continents. In the late 2000s, Renault-Nissan decided to work on developing futuristic design and technologies. It introduced all-electric concept cars called Z.E (Zero Emission), with the first model being Renault Kangoo Z.E followed by Renault Fluence Z.E. in 2011 and Renault Zoe in 2012. They are a part of the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Research Centre at the University of California in Davis, USA.
