SUV cars have gained huge popularity in India in the last few years. Having comfort and space of a sedan, and ability to counter all kinds of terrains, SUVs have become the favourite vehicle type among Indian buyers. Every brand is stepping into this segment in a bid to cash in their growing demand. The result is that SUV car prices in India start from around Rs. 5 Lakh.
Gone are the days when SUVs were considered best for off-roading purposes or long routes only. The stringent competition among brands has led to the segregation of the SUV category based on the dimensions and design, leading to the launch of compact SUVs that are suitable for city driving as well. With the latest SUVs being so much technologically-advanced in one way or another, it is difficult to pick one particular model as the best SUV in India.
Power & Space
Smaller SUVs are comparatively more affordable, and have a decent engine power and fuel economy. At the same time, smaller SUVs may have cramped-up rear seats, and lesser seating capacity and boot space. Mid-sized, non-hybrid SUVs are generally considered as the best mileage SUVs, and have impressive space and power. Larger SUV models do look high profile, and have ample space and seating capacity, but are comparatively difficult to be handled by everyone and have a high maintenance cost. Boot space in SUVs generally varies from 350 – 750 litres.
Price & Mileage
SUVs tend to have higher running cost as the mileage generally varies between 14-24 kmpl depending upon the engine type and capacity. Cost to own an SUV starts from around Rs. 35,000 for a period of 5 years and increases depending on the class of the car and maintenance.
SUV model cars generally offer modes like 4 Hi, 4 Lo and 2 Hi, and a 4x4 transmission system. Other distinctive characteristics of this class of vehicles are the larger approach, departure and break over angles, and higher ground clearance than sedans and hatchbacks.
Safety Feature
In terms of safety, you get features like ABS, 2 airbags as standard, EBD, ESC, Hill Assist, Traction Control, etc., in SUV cars in India. Cars in this category generally have AC vents for the second row as well and have an option of split seats (captain seats) in the second row.
